The Calvary Baptist Church was founded on 2 June 1862 by Amos Kendall. Kendall donated about $90,000 to help construct the building. The church opened its doors in June 1866, around the time Kendall was made a senior deacon in the church. But within 18 months the building was consumed by fire. Kendall donated another $15,000 to rebuild the building because it was only insured for $50,000.
The church founded the Calvary Womens Services in 1983. It was the first ever womens shelter in the area of Washington Metro. They aim to empower homeless women in Washington, D.C. by transforming their lives through housing, health, education, and employment programs. Furthermore, they make sure that each woman have the educational support they need to take positive steps toward independence and the access to the proper trauma-informed healthcare. These programs include transitional and permanent housing, personalized case management, life skills, and education opportunities, job training, health and wellness services, on-site therapy and daily addiction recovery meetings.
